“Zwischenzug" (the unexpected intermediate move)

Talk and discussion by Natasha Regan and Matt Ball

Zwischenzug! is the chess tactic also known as the intermediate move, or intermezzo. This exciting manoeuvre can catch opponents off guard because it is against the expected run of play.

Natasha has been kind enough to send a little write-up which shows how attractive the session will be, especially as it is going to be interactive:

“WIM Natasha Regan and National Instructor Matt Ball, co-authors of the popular book and Chessable course Zwischenzug!, will be visiting to host a lecture, book signing, and puzzle solving contest. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the art of in-between moves and the "Awesome Eight" patterns that can be used to surprise your opponents. Come along for a fun evening and get ready to sharpen your chess tactics! Copies of "Zwischenzug!" will be available to purchase at a special rate.

Best wishes,

Natasha and Matt”

Womens International Master Natasha Katherine Regan is an award-winning chess author, well known for her book Game Changer, co-authored with Mathew Sadler. She has represented England at two Chess Olympiads. As a senior (50+), she won the Women's English Seniors Chess Championship in both 2023 and in 2024.

Matt Ball is a content creator and chess coach from England. He holds the FIDE title of National Instructor, a FIDE-certified title for coaches, and is also a regular tournament player.   As a coach, one of Ball's proudest achievements is seeing his students represent England in international tournaments, having taught them from a young age.  Ball's known for his fun and engaging teaching style, which is exemplified in his first course for Chessable, "Zwischenzug! A Comprehensive Guide to Intermediate Moves", which he co-authored with WIM Natasha Regan.
